counting or natural numbers The numbers we count with no decimals or fractions. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…

operations Any of the single steps in a math problem. (+- × ÷ exponents and parentheses)
equation A statement in math that says two things are equal using an equal sign. Ex: 2+3=5; 2x=4; y=2x-4
inequality A statement in math that says one thing is greater than or less than or just not equal to another using one of the following signs: ˂ ≤ ≠ ≥ ˃.
expression A statement in math that does not have an equal or inequality sign. Ex.: 2; 2x; 2x^2+4; 2xy+3z+13
term One part of an expression separated by a plus or minus sign. In 2x^2+4x-5, 2x^2, 4x and -5 are the ____________.
variable A letter representing a changing or unknown amount. In y = 2x – 4, y and x are _______________.
