Phases of Matter

Name and definition of 4 major phases of matter

solid substance with definite shape and volume; particles only vibrate in place; lowest energy level
liquid substance with definite volume but shape that changes with container; particles slide past each other; more energy than solids
gas substance without definite shape or volume; fills container entirely; higher energy level than liquids
plasma substance where the gas phase is heated until atomic electrons are no longer associated with any particular atomic nucleus; made up of positively charged ions and unbound electrons
