Nature of Science

TermDefinition
Accuracy Describes how close a measured value is to the true value of a quantity.
Controlled Experiment Experiment involving manipulation of a single variable.
Precision The degree of exactness with which a measurement is made.
Significant Figures Digits in a measurement that are known with certainty plus the first digit that is uncertain.
Inverse Relationship When a dependent variable decreases with an increase in the independent variable.
Direct Relationship When a dependent variable increases with an increase in the independent variable.
Slope Change in a line's y-value divided by a it's change in x-value.
Independent Variable Factors that you are manipulating in your experiment.
Controlled Variable A variable that is held constant.
Constant A number expressing a property, quantity, or relation that remains unchanged under specified conditions.
Dependent Variable The variable that responds to change in the independent variable.
