Parts of Speech

TermDefinition
Subject the topic of the sentence.
Predicate the action or existence of the topic of the sentence including the compliment.
Nouns People, places, things, or ideas.
Verbs The word or phrase of words that represents the action or existence without the compliment.
Types of Nouns Common, proper, collective, and abstract.
Types of Verbs Transitive, intransitive, to be verbs, and modals
Types of Sentences Simple, Compound, Complex, and Compound Complex
Pronouns Nouns that take the place of other nouns
Antecedents Words that refer to the pronoun used to replace the word
Types of Pronouns Nominative and Objective
Adjectives Modify nouns
Adverbs Modify verbs, adjectives, and adverbs
Prepositions Words that begin prepositional phrases
