Figurative Language

Vocabulary Cards for Figurative Language Types

TermDefinition
figurative language language enriched by word images and figures of speech
hyperbole a figure of speech that uses exaggeration (ex: I've told you a million times)
idiom a combination of words that means something other than what it seems to mean
metaphor a figure of speech where a comparison is made between two unlike things (ex: He's a tiger)
personification a figure of speech where human qualities are given to inanimate objects (ex: The stars danced playfully in the night sky.)
simile a figure of speech where a comparison is made between two unlike things using the words "like" or "as" (She's as sly as a fox.)
onomatopoeia the formation of a word used to imitate the sound of an object (ex: vroom, bzzz, mooo)
alliteration the repetition of the initial sound of two or more words (ex: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.)
