| hyperbole | a figure of speech that uses exaggeration (ex: I've told you a million times) |
| idiom | a combination of words that means something other than what it seems to mean |
| metaphor | a figure of speech where a comparison is made between two unlike things (ex: He's a tiger) |
| personification | a figure of speech where human qualities are given to inanimate objects (ex: The stars danced playfully in the night sky.) |
| simile | a figure of speech where a comparison is made between two unlike things using the words "like" or "as" (She's as sly as a fox.) |
| onomatopoeia | the formation of a word used to imitate the sound of an object (ex: vroom, bzzz, mooo) |
| alliteration | the repetition of the initial sound of two or more words (ex: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.) |
