Character and Miscellaneous Literary Terms

| Character | persona in a story, poem, or play-usually a regular human being |
| round character | similar to a real person, these characters have many different character traits, which can sometimes contradict one another |
| flat character | a character that has only one or two traits, and these can be described in a few words. These characters have no depth, like a piece of cardboard. |
| static character | a character that does not change much in the course of the story |
| dynamic character | a character that changes because of the story’s events |
| protagonist | main character in a fiction or drama; the person who sets the plot in motion. Often the hero of the story, and usually a rounded, dynamic character |
| antagonist | the character or force that blocks the protagonist |
| indirect characterization | The reader has to use his/her judgment to decide what a character is like, based on the evidence the writer gives him/her. |
| direct characterization | The author directly states what kind of person the character is: sneaky, honest, evil, innocent, etc. |
| mood | the feeling (emotions) a story gives readers |
| theme | the message the author wants the reader to get from the story |
| imagery | the use of descriptive words and phrases to create pictures, or images, in the reader’s mind |
