Character and Miscellaneous Literary Terms

QuestionAnswer
Character persona in a story, poem, or play-usually a regular human being
round character similar to a real person, these characters have many different character traits, which can sometimes contradict one another
flat character a character that has only one or two traits, and these can be described in a few words. These characters have no depth, like a piece of cardboard.
static character a character that does not change much in the course of the story
dynamic character a character that changes because of the story’s events
protagonist main character in a fiction or drama; the person who sets the plot in motion. Often the hero of the story, and usually a rounded, dynamic character
antagonist the character or force that blocks the protagonist
indirect characterization The reader has to use his/her judgment to decide what a character is like, based on the evidence the writer gives him/her.
direct characterization The author directly states what kind of person the character is: sneaky, honest, evil, innocent, etc.
mood the feeling (emotions) a story gives readers
theme the message the author wants the reader to get from the story
imagery the use of descriptive words and phrases to create pictures, or images, in the reader’s mind
