| setting | the time and place of a story |
| flashback | a scene that interrupts the present action of the plot to flash backward and tell what happened at an earlier time |
| flash-forward | when a story goes ahead in time |
| plot | a series of related events that make up a story (the action of the story) |
| exposition | the part of the plot that gives information about the characters and their problems or conflicts |
| inciting event | the event that sets the conflict in motion |
| rising action | the problem or series of conflicts that build toward the climax; complication |
| climax | the turning point in a story |
| falling action | the steps that lead to a solution to the problem |
| resolution | the outcome that brings a story to a close |
| short story | a brief work of fiction |
| realistic fiction | events in the story are filled with facts that could actually have happened; set in a real time and place |
