Terminology used within AS+A2 English
| Term | Definition |

| Assonance | Similar sounding vowels in words, e.g "sIlver wInter" |
| Allegory | A surface narrative carries a second meaning either symbolic or metaphorical. |
| Connotation | Ideas/meanings associated with a word, they tend to be either positive or negative. |
| Binary Opposition | Opposed pairs of objects or ideas, essentially opposites. |
| Motif | A recurrent thematic element in artistic/literary work. |
| Hyperbole | A device using exaggeration to achieve its effect. |
| Oxymoron | Two contradictory words paired to create a level of meaning e.g "marriage hearse". |
| Paradox | Reveals a kind of truth, originally appearing contradictory-two opposing ideas. |
| Rhetoric | The art of persuasion. |
| Pathos | Moments in a work of art which evoke strong feelings of pity or sorrow. |
| Personification | Attributing human characteristics to non-human objects. |
| Satire | A text that ridicules a person,attitude or idea, often through exaggeration. |
| Elision | Letters missing from a word. E.g "'aven't" |
| Solioquy | Character speaks directly to the audience, as if thinking aloud. |
| Sibilance | The repetition of the "s" sound. |
| Dialect | Differences in lexis/syntax within a language. |
| Syntax | Arrangement of words and phrases in a sentence. |
| Analogy | Explaining something in terms of something else. |
| Semantics | The meaning of words. |
| Onomatopoeia | Where a word is spelt just like the sound it makes e.g "kaboom". |
