Literary Terms

Metaphor A comparison that doesn't use like or as
Simile A comparison that uses like or as
Hyperbole A huge exaggeration
Allusion A reference to something often literary
Tragedy A serious drama typically describing a conflict between the protagonist and a superior force (as destiny) and having a sorrowful or disastrous conclusion that elicits pity or terror
Exposition Designed to convey information or explain what is difficult to understand
Rising Action The events of a dramatic or narrative plot preceding the climax
Climax The turning point in a plot or dramatic action
Conclusion The close or last part; the end or finish
Personification Giving inanimate object human characteristics
Imagery The use of description that helps the reader imagine how something looks, sounds, feels, smells or taste
Symbolism The use of one things to represent another
Flashback An unexpected recurrence of the effects of a hallucinogenic drug long after its original use
Irony Language that conveys a certain idea by saying just the opposite
Foreshadowing A technique in which an author gives clues about something that will happen later in the story
Characterization Representation of a character or characters on the stage or in writing, especially by imitating or describing actions, gestures, or speeches
Resolution A resolving to do something
Assonance The repetition of a vowel
Alliteration Repetition of first consonants in a group of words
Rhyme Correspondence of sound between words or the endings of words
Theme The central idea of a work
Pun The use of a word in a way that plays on its different meanings
Oxymoron A figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction
Malapropism Misuse of a word, especially by confusion with one of similar sound
Paradox A seeming contradiction
Subtext
Narrative Consisting of or characterized by the telling of a story
Memoir An account of the personal experiences of an author
