Copyright in Canada

Terms that apply to copyright in Canadian educational contexts

TermDefinition
Access Copyright Non-profit corporation that collects (and pays copyright holders)fees for copyright licenses in Canada (for English publications)
Copyright Exclusive legal rights that the creator has over their original work,i.e. the right to decide how it is reproduced/sold/performed/etc.
Intellectual Property The intangible part of what copyright protects.
Royalty Percentage paid when a work is used.
Trade-marks Sign, symbol or expression is exclusive to a company or individual to "mark" their products/services.
Public Domain Fair game
Moral Rights *not about profits Moral rights are the author/creator's rights to the integrity of their work.
Performing Rights When an artist publicly performs a song without having the performing rights, they need to pay a licensing fee.
Plagiarism Passing off someone else's original work as your own (without quoting/citing or substantially altering the work).
Fair Dealing Times when a person is exempt from copyright infringement...many educational purposes are covered!
Patent Exclusive rights to intellectual property for a limited time.
Blanket License Rather than paying individual fees for each work performed publicly, radio stations (etc) pay a corporation like SOCAN a blanket license for thousands of songs.
