| First person | story is told by a character within (I, Me, My) |
| Third person | story is told by someone outside the action (he, She) |
| Plot | All of the events that make up a story |
| Exposition | Part of the plot, beginning where the setting and the characters are revealed/introduced |
| Setting | Time and place for the action of the story |
| Foreshadowing | Hints provided by the author to suggest future events, create suspense |
| characterization | creation of characters |
| rising action | part of the plot, series of events leading up to the climax; driven by the plot |
| conflict | main problems or struggles in the story |
| Internal conflict | struggle within the heart and mind of the character |
| External conflict | clash of outside forces |
| Climax | Most intense part of the story where the conflict has reached it's peak |
| Falling action | events following the climax where the tension releases and the story begins to close |
| Resolution | ending of a story where loose ends are tied up |
