| Allusion | A reference to another piece of art |
| Ambivalence | To have mixed feelings |
| Antagonist/Protagonist | Bad Guy/Hero |
| Bookends | To begin and end a story with a close connection |
| Cautionary Tale | A story told to warn the innocent of worldly danger |
| Character foil | Opposite types of characters shed light on eachother |
| Climax | Peak of the story's action |
| Conflict | Opposing force/problem required for plot |
| Connotation | Figurative interpretation of a word |
| Denotation | Dictionary definition of a word |
| Direct Characterization | An obvious description (she has blonde hair instead of she isn't very smart) |
| Indirect Characterization | An hidden description (he drowns kittens instead of he is mean) |
| Epiphany | Realization |
| Extended Metaphor | One metaphor carried through a whole piece of writing. |
| Foreshadowing | Hints at the outcome of the story |
| Genre | Category of Literature |
| Irony | Surprising/dramatic contradiction |
| Juxtaposition | Placing two unlikely things side by side (fancy museum vases combined with jumping tornado) |
| Local color | Props that are specific to a particular time or setting (Cowboy hat in Texas, armor in Middle Ages) |
| Motif | A thread woven throughout the story, usually a symbol or theme (like Mockingbird in TKAM) |
| Motivation | Reason for action |
| Novella | A small novel (The House on Mango Street) |
| Point of view | Perspective of the storyteller (1st-I, 2nd-You, 3rd Omniscient-He/she knows everything, 3rd Limited-He/she doesn't know everything. |
| Realism | Presenting a story with reasonable events, accurate details. |
| Resolution | Resolving the conflict of a story |
| Retrospective Narrator | Telling a story by looking backward |
| Romanticism | Looking at the world unrealistically (Cold Sassy Tree) |
| Setting | Time and Place of a story |
| Simile/metaphor | Comparing using like or as or just comparing |
| Suspense | Creating anxious uncertainty about events |
| Symbol | Something that represents something important |
| Synesthesia | Mixing the senses (velvety lung, green perfume) |
| Theme | Insight about life revealed in literature |
| Tone | The writer's attitude |
| Vignette | A small, literary sketch |
