| Amazon River | second longest river in the world; located in the Amazon Rainforest of South America |
| Yangtze River | longest river in China; the Three Gorges Dam is constructed on this river |
| Congo | River of the Congo Rainforest of Africa |
| Danube River | begins in the Alps of Europe and flows eastward, emptying into the Black Sea |
| Ganges River | sacred river which begins in the Himalayans, flows through India and empties into the Bay of Bengal |
| Tigris & Euphrates Rivers | located in the Fertile Cresent/Mesopotamia of modern day Iraq; empties into the Persian Gulf |
| Suez Canal | built in Egypt; connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea |
| Panama Canal | built in Panama; connects the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean |
| Lake Baikal | deepest lake in the world; located in Siberia, Russia |
| Aral Sea | located in Central Asia; has greatly shrunk since the 1970s due to water being diverted for irrigation |
| Mediterranean Sea | separates Africa from Europe |
| Lake Chad | shrinking lake in northern Africa along the Sahel due to desertification |
| North Sea | located between the UK, Norway, and Netherlands; abundance of oil |
| Caribbean Sea | located east of Central America |
| Caspian Sea | located north of Iran |
| Black Sea | located north of Turkey; Danube River flows into it |
| Strait of Gibraltar | narrow strip of waterway the joins the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean; separates Morocco and Spain |
| Strait of Magellan | located in South America; narrow strip of water that connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans |
| English Channel | body of water which separates the UK from France |
| Persian Gulf | known for its vast deposits of oil; body of water surrounded by Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, and Iran. |
| Red Sea | body of water which separates Saudi Arabia from Egypt |
| Pacific | ocean separating the continents of Asia and North & South America |
| Atlantic | ocean separating the Americas from Europe and Africa |
| Arctic | northern ocean bordering Alaska, Canada, and Russia to name a few |
| Indian | ocean separating Africa from Australia |
| Ural | mountains which divide the European and Asian parts of Russia |
| Atlas | mountains located in Morocco in northwest Africa |
| Alps | mountains located in Europe, primarily Switzerland |
| Pyrenees | mountains which separates Spain from France |

| Himalayas | mountains in Nepal & China; tallest in the world |
| Mt. Everest | part of the Himalayas; tallest mountain in the world |

| Mt. Fuji | famous volcano in Japan |
| Matterhorn | deadliest mountain peak of the Alps |
| Sahara | largest hot desert in the world; northern Africa |
| Gobi | large desert in northern China and Mongolia |
| Atacama | largest desert in South America |
| Tasmania | island of Australia; located off the southeast of the mainland |
| Outback | central, dry/arid region of Australia |
| Great Barrier Reef | located off the northeastern coast of Australia; largest of its kind in the world |
| fjords | inlets of water with steep sides; found in Norway, New Zealand and Chile |
| Ring of Fire | fault line surrounding much of the Pacific Ocean; cause of most of the world's volcanoes & earthquakes |

| terrace farming | steps on the sides of hills for farming; found in Southeast Asia and Latin America |
| monsoon | season of tremendous rainfall; occurs in southern Asia |
| demilitarized zone (DMZ) | separates North and South Korea at the 38th parallel |
| OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) | countries formed this organization to regulate oil prices; includes many Middle Eastern countries |

| Sahal | region below the Sahara Desert in Africa; this area is turning into desert; place of famine |
| desertification | the process of land turning into desert |
| famine | period of starvation due to no food |
| savanna | tall grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa; where you find many of the large African animals |
| apartheid | period in South Africa; when the blacks and whites were separated and blacks were treated as second-class citizens |
| Jutland | peninsula that contains mainland Denmark |
| geothermal energy | energy from the Earth; comes from volcanic activity |
| polders | land reclaimed from the sea; found in the Netherlands |

| communist | form of government where the government owns all the means of production; people do NOT have freedom; China, North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba (formerlly East Germany too) to name a few |
| democracy | form of government where people have the power; US, Europe, Japan (formerlly West Germany too) to name a few |
| Siberia | eastern, Asian portion of Russia; not as populated as the west, known for cold weather |
