QuestionAnswer
Explain "Our eyes were opened, but too late." Where was the train at this point? The quote references the fact that by the time the citizens of Sighet realized what was happening, it was already too late. Train was leaving Hungary.
What was foreshadowed by Madame Schachter's nightmare? Madame Schachter's nightmare foreshadowed the horror that the Jews would face in the concentration camps.
What did some of the passengers do to quiet Madame. Schachter? The passengers beat and gagged Madame Schachter to keep her quiet.
Where did the train finally stop? The train finally stopped at Birkenau, the reception center for Auschwitz.
When questioned by the ass. S.S. Officer, why did Elie lie about his age and occupation? He lied about his age because he knew he would be killed if he did not.
What was the first horrifying sight that Elie at first disbelieved? He saw the bodies of babies and adults being burned in the fires.
Explain what Elie meant when he said, "Never shall I forget these flames which consumed my faith forever." When he saw the horrible things that were happening, and the bodies being burned, it was as if in that instance the flames had completely taken away his belief in God.
How had Elie changed in a short time? After a short time Elie went from someone who was full of faith and had devoted his life to the study of religion, to someone who was now doubting if true religion even existed.
What was Eli's first impression of Auschwitz after leaving Birkenau? He felt that Auschwitz was better than Birkenau. (Concrete buildings, little gardens, etc.)
What was the "compulsory formality" At the entrance to all camps? The "compulsory formality" was that they had to shower every time they entered the camps.
What sort of identification was used on the prisoners? The prisoner identification was a number engraved in their arms like a tattoo.
Why was the prisoner in charge of Elie's block removed from this position? The prisoner in charge of Elie's camp was removed because he acted to humane.
What were the prisoners' rations at each meal? The prisoners were given soup at each meal.
What was Bela Katz forced to do once he was chosen for his strength? He was forced to put his own father's body into the crematorium.
