Night-chapter 4 test

QuestionAnswer
What were the objectives of the medical examinations? The medical examinations were used to weed out sick prisoners who would not be able to work, and to look for gold fillings that could be confiscated.
Why were the Jewish musicians not allowed to play music by Beethoven? The soldiers would not allow Jewish musicians to play Beethoven because he was a German composer and they did not feel the Jews were worthy of playing music from a German composer.
Describe one of Idek's bouts of madness. At one point Idek's beats Elie's father with a pipe, and another time he whips Elie 25 times for spying on him.
How did Elie initially avoid losing his gold crown? He pretended that he was sick.
Who did Elie meet years later on the Paris Metro? He met the young woman that he had seen in the concentration camp.
What happened when Elie refused to give his crown to Franek? What was the end result? When he refused to give up his crown, Franek beat him, and then eventually had his tooth removed with a rusty spoon.
Describe the scene with the soup cauldrons. During an air raid, a prisoner tried to crawl along the ground to eat some soup out of the cauldrons.
During one of the preliminary "ceremonies" for a hanging, what did Juliek whisper to Elie? What does this suggest? Juliek wanted to know when this was going to be over because he was hungry. It suggested that he was completely numb to the hanging that he was witnessing.

During one hanging, Elie and the other prisoners cried. What made this hanging different from the others? This hanging was difficult to watch because it was a younger child, and the boy suffered because he did not have enough weight to be killed quickly by the hanging.
