Science Chapter 7

QuestionAnswer
What is the difference between an acid and a base? Acids all contain Hydrogen But bases contain hydroxide.
Explain the pH scale? A pH scale measures how acidic or how basic something is.
Bases are.. They feel slippery or soapy. Only some are corrosive.
Acids are.. Corrosive, They react with solid substances. They have a sour taste.
What is Neutralisation? When an acid or base react with each other. Neutralisation is to stop something from having an affect.
If the pH level in a swimming pool is too low then.... It is too acidic and people will get stinging eyes.
Explain a chemical change? A chemical change is when atoms re-arrange themselves to make a new substance.
Explain a Physical change? Is when something changes its appearance (physically) but it is still the same substance.
Products mean? The new substance that is made after the reaction had occurred.
Reactants mean? Substances the react with each other to make a new substance.
What is the difference between alkali and base? Alkalis can dissolve in water bases cant.
What happens to the atoms in substances that take part in chemical reactions? The atoms re-arrange themselves to make a new substance.
How are exothermic reactions different from endothermic reactions? Exothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that release heat or and energy. Endothermic is a chemical reaction in which heat or and energy that is absorbed.
Are explosions endothermic or exothermic reactions? Explain your answer. an explosion is a release of energy so it is exothermic.
What common property do some acids and bases have when they come into contact with solid substances? They both can be corrosive.
Explain why the chemical reaction between an acid and a base is called neutralisation. A neutral substance has a PH of 7 and if you react enough of an acid with a base you will get H20 which is neutral
Which substance is produced in all neutralisation reactions? Water and salt
What is acid rain and how is it caused? Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air. Pollution can cause acid rain to occur.
Describe two different ways in which acid rain can harm the plants and animals in streams and lakes. It makes the lakes too acidic so the animals would die and the plants soak up all the acid in their roots which can harm them
What characteristics do all combustion reactions have in common? Combustion reactions: require oxygen give off heat give off light
What are the products of all combustion reactions in when fossil fuels are burned? fossil fuels release carbon dioxide gas and water vapor as the main products
Describe at least two effects on the environment of the combustion of fossil fuels. Pollution occurs and it can harm our earth and temperature, Acid rain can be produced
List four examples of observable evidence that a chemical reaction has taken place. 1) color change 2) the formation of gas bubbles 3) formation of a precipitate 4) temperature change
What is the law of conservation? Mean matter changes form but it cannot be created nor destroyed.
What is law of constant proportions? Means that every pure substance always contains the same elements combined in the same proportions by weight.
Name 2 Acids? Lemon Juice, copper nitrate
Name 2 Bases? Ammonia, Sodium Chloride.
