TermDefinition
plot the series of events in a story. It consists of a conflict, or problem; a climax, or turning point; and a resolution of the conflict
point of view the author’s opinion about the topic
pronouns words that take the place of nouns, matching the gender and number of the nouns they replace
relative pronouns pronouns that join dependent and independent clauses
resolution the part of the plot in which the conflict is resolved, usually at the end of the story
semicolon a punctuation mark that represents a longer pause, joining two related independent clauses
simile figurative language that compares two things using like or as
simple sentence a sentence that has one independent clause
technical directions step-by-step information for how to do something
textual features common parts of informational texts, including introductions, topic sentences, conclusions, footnotes, and bibliographies
theme the underlying meaning or insight gained from a piece of writing
time order organizational structure in which events are presented in the order they occur
tone the author’s attitude toward the subject
topic sentence a sentence that explains the main idea of a paragraph or passage
