compound sentence a sentence that consists of two or more simple sentences put together
compound-complex sentence a sentence that contains at least two independent clauses and a dependent clause
conclusion statement or paragraph that summarizes important points or opinions in a passage or part of a passage
conflict the problem the main character faces in a story
consumer, workplace, and public documents pieces of writing from everyday life, including newspaper articles, advertisements, recipes, and directions
context clues the words, phrases, or sentences around or near an unfamiliar word that help you understand its meaning.
contrast to find differences between two or more passages or things
dangling modifier occurs when there is no word for a modifier to hold onto logically
demonstrative pronouns pronouns that point out specifics, such as this, that, those
dependent clause a sentence part that has a subject and a verb but cannot stand alone.
effect what happens as a result of the action or event
end mark a punctuation mark that ends a sentence, including periods, question marks, and exclamation points
footnote a reference found at the bottom of a page in an informational text
graphic organizer a visual aid that arranges and identifies the relationships among facts and ideas
