adjective clause a dependent clause used to modify a noun or pronoun
adverb clause a dependent clause that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb
alliteration the use of a series of words that begin with the same sound
author’s argument the case an author makes in order to persuade the reader to do or believe in something
author’s purpose the reason an author writes a selection, usually to entertain, to persuade, to inform, or to explain
bibliography a list of sources used in research
cause an action or event that makes something happen
characters the people or animals in a story. They are developed through their thoughts, words, and actions.
climax the part of the plot in which the main character deals with the conflict; often the turning point of the story
colon a punctuation mark that represents a longer pause, used as a means of introduction
comma type of punctuation used before a conjunction when two thoughts are expressed, after or before a dependent clause, to distinguish a quote, or to clarify details in long sentences
compare to find similarities between two or more passages or things
compare and contrast across texts to examine similarities and differences in the type of writing, topic, characters, plot, and other characteristics of two or more written works.
complex sentences a sentence that has an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.
