assimilation the process of fitting in to a new culture or becoming like others in that culture
asylum protection granted by one nation to a refugee from another nation, usually due to political unrest in the refugee's native land
diversity variety; differences. Refers to the differences between human societies and individuals
emigration the act of leaving a country to settle somewhere else
ethnicity common group characteristics based on race, nationality, religion, or language
forced immigration going to another country against one's will; the American slave system is an example
"green card" a work permit given to legal immigrants who have not yet become citizens
greenhorn a newcomer unacquainted with customs and culture
illegal immigrant refers to any immigrant who does not go through the correct legal procedure to live and work in a country
immigration the act of entering a country to live there
INS Immigration and Naturalization Service; the American agency that regulates the flow of immigration by enforcing U.S immigration laws
legal immigrant refers to any immigrant who goes through the correct legal procedure to live and work in a country
migration movement from one place to another
naturalization the process in which an immigrant gains the rights of a natural-born citizen
passport a legal permit to leave the country of citizenship
pluralism a condition in society in which many ethnic, religious, or social groups coexist within a common civilization while keeping individual traditions
quota system governmental regulation which allows a limited number of immigrants per year
refugee a person who flees from a place to escape danger or persecution
visa a legal permit to enter a country
