Vocabulary Lesson 29 - Words About Music

TermDefinition
A Capella Without instrumental accompaniment.
Aria A solo vocal piece with instrumental accompaniment, as in an opera.
Cacophony A harsh, unpleasant, or jarring mixture of sounds.
Cadence The balance or rhythmic flow of music, speech, poetry, or movement. The rhythm or beat. A progression of chords moving toward a harmonic close or resolution.
Crescendo A gradual increase in volume or intensity of sound. A buildup of force or intensity.
Dissonance A harsh disagreeable combination of sounds. A lack of agreement, consistency, or harmony; conflict.
Libretto The text of a dramatic musical work, such as an opera.
Motif A short rhythm or melody repeated or evoked many times in a work of music. A recurrent thematic element in art or literature. A repeated figure or design in architecture or decoration.
Sonata A composition of three or four independent movements, written for one or more solo instruments, one of which is usually a keyboard instrument.
Staccato Having short, sharp sounds; abrupt and crisp.
