| A Capella | Without instrumental accompaniment. |
| Aria | A solo vocal piece with instrumental accompaniment, as in an opera. |
| Cacophony | A harsh, unpleasant, or jarring mixture of sounds. |
| Cadence | The balance or rhythmic flow of music, speech, poetry, or movement. The rhythm or beat. A progression of chords moving toward a harmonic close or resolution. |
| Crescendo | A gradual increase in volume or intensity of sound. A buildup of force or intensity. |
| Dissonance | A harsh disagreeable combination of sounds. A lack of agreement, consistency, or harmony; conflict. |
| Libretto | The text of a dramatic musical work, such as an opera. |
| Motif | A short rhythm or melody repeated or evoked many times in a work of music. A recurrent thematic element in art or literature. A repeated figure or design in architecture or decoration. |
| Sonata | A composition of three or four independent movements, written for one or more solo instruments, one of which is usually a keyboard instrument. |
| Staccato | Having short, sharp sounds; abrupt and crisp. |
