figurative language writing or speech that is not meant to be taken literally.
simile figures of speech that use like or as to compare two unlike things
metaphor figures of speech that compare two unlike things without using like or as
personification a figure of speech that gives human feelings or characteristics to things that aren't human
hyperbole a type of figurative language that uses extreme exaggeration to drive home a point
imagery the use of vivid, sensory details to create a picture in the reader's mind
symbol objects, people or places that represent something abstract
speaker in a poem the person talking in the poem
