English language and literature key vocabulary

| genre | a form of writing eg narrative |
| narrative | a story |
| orientation | the beginning of a story where the characters and setting are introduced |
| complication | the problem in a story |
| resolution | the part of a story where the problem is solved |
| coda | the 'moral' or lesson stated at the end of a story |
| character | a person/creature that is in a story |
| plot | the sequence of events in a story |
| setting | where and when a story takes place |
| theme | the 'big ideas' in a story - what the author wants us to think more about |
| dialogue | direct speech - when a character is talking |
| imagery | using words that create a picture in the readers mind - using similes, metaphors, personification |
| simile | comparing two things using 'like' or 'as' eg 'she ate like a pig' |
| metaphor | comparing two things but saying one is the other eg 'he is a beanpole' |
| personification | giving human qualities to animals or things eg 'the sky wept' |
| onomatopoeia | words whose sound suggests their meaning eg 'whoosh', 'trickle' |
| alliteration | the beginning of the words sound the same, like a tongue twister eg 'Tom told tales' |
| assonance | the middle (vowel sounds) of words are the same eg 'howl' and 'round' |
| rhyme | the end of words sound the same eg 'cat' and 'bat' |
| analysis | to look closely at the parts, identify techniques and explain their effects on the audience |
