| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| first class lever | has the fulcrum between the effort arm and the load |
| second class lever | has the fulcrum at one end and the effort arm at the other end. the load is in the middle |
| third class lever | has the fulcrum at one end and the load at the other end |
| pulley | a wheel that has a groove along its edge and a rope or chain goes in the groove |
| wheel and axle | either a wheel turns an axle or an axle turns a wheel around a central pivot |
| screw | inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder or cone |
| inclined plane | a flat slopping surface |
| wedge | made up of one or two inclined planes |
| examples of first class lever | tongs for salad, pliers, scissors |
| examples of second class lever | nut cracker, wheel barrow, bottle opener |
| examples of third class lever | tongs, stapler, tweezers |
| examples of pulley | elevator, flag raiser, crane, well with bucket |
| examples of wheel and axle | water wheel, Ferris wheel, wheel on a bike, fishing pole |
| examples of screw | post hole digger, jar or bottle top, drill bit |
| example of inclined plane | road on a hill, wheelchair ramp, slide |
| example of wedge | letter opener, maul or ax, chisel, doorstop, crowbar |
