Poetry Terms and Examples

| personification | giving human/lifelike characteristics to an animal or inanimate object, ex. The cake was saying my name. |
| Assonance | the repetition of vowel sounds in a line of poetry, ex. red leather, yellow leather |
| Alliteration | the repetition of beginning consonant sounds in a line of poetry, ex. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. |
| Simile | comparing two things using the words "like" or "as", ex. I am as fast as a cheetah. |
| metaphor | comparing two unlike things, ex. This classroom is an ice box. |
| symbolism | when a person, place, or idea represents something bigger than itself, ex. dove=peace; white=purity; purple=royalty |
| hyperbole | exaggeration, ex. I have a ton of homework.; I'm freezing to death. |
| onomatopoeia | a word that represents a sound, ex. buzz; crash; bang; pow |

| What type of poem is a ballad? List its characteristics. | Narrative beginning is abrupt; told through dialogue; tragic, meant to be sung, rhymes, simple "folksy" language, contains a refrain; quatrains (4-line stanzas) |
| What type of poem is an epic poem? List characteristics | Narrative tells of hero's adventures through action/battles, usually has gods and goddesses, shows the hero's flaws, extrememly long, passed down through oral tradition |
| Characteristics of a lyric poem. | usually written in first person, personal, emotional, short, musical |
| What type of poem is an ode? List characteristics | lyric celebrates something, shows emotion, personal, longer than a simple lyric |
| What type of poem is a sonnet? List characteristics | Lyric 14 lines long, rhyme scheme is abab cdcd efef gg, has quatrains and a couplet at the end, meter is iambic pentameter, be able to mark the feet and accent marks of the stressed and unstressed syllables |

| What is a haiku? | Japanese 3-line poem, first line has 5 syllables, second line has 7 syllables, last line has 5 syllables, usually about nature or everyday occurrences |
| What is a limerik? | humerous, 5 lines long, witty, nonsensical, rhyme scheme is aabba |
