| alliteration | the repeating of beginning consonant sounds |
| allusion | a reference to a well known person place thing or even that the writer assumes the reader will be familiar with |
| flashback | a technique in which a writer interrupts a story to go back and explain an earlier event |
| foreshadow | hints or clues that an author uses to suggest what will happen next in a story |
| hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration |
| idiom | words used in a special way that my be different from their literal meaning |
| imagery | figurative language that uses your senses to suggest how something looks feels smells sounds or tastes |
| irony | a technique that uses a word or phrase to mean the exact opposite of its meaning |
| metaphor | comparing two or more things without the words like or as |
| onomatopoeia | the use of a word whose sound makes you think of its meaning |
| personification | a figure of speech in which a nonhuman thing has human characteristics |
| repetition | the repeating of a word or phrase to add rhythm or to focus on an idea |
| simile | comparing two things using like and as |
| symbolism | a concrete or real object used to represent an idea |
