Adolf Hitler An Austrian-born German politician and the founder/leader of the Nazi Party.
Air Raid An attack in which bombs are dropped from an aircraft onto a ground target.
Allies "Good" countries. WW2: United States, France, USSR, Britain
Anti-Jewish Laws Laws that defined Jews and deprived them of a variety of civil, political and economic rights. Also laid the groundwork for expropriation, deportation and ultimately the Holocaust.
Anti-Semitism The intense dislike for and prejudice against the Jewish.
Aryan A non-Jewish Caucasian, especially of Noraic stock.
Aryanization of Jewish property "De-Jew"-ing the property market so after the Jews had to sell their property, they got nothing.
Assimilate Take in and understand fully.
BBC British Broadcasting Corporation; Publicly financed broadcasting system in Britain.
Black market An illegal traffic or trade in officially controlled or scarce commodities.
Blitzkrieg Literally: "Lightning War"; A sudden, heavy attack intended to bring about a swift victory.
Boycott Act of voluntary abstaining from using, buying or dealing with a person, organization or country as an expression of protest.
Christian One who has received Christian baptism or is a believer in Jesus Christ.
Concentration camp A place where large numbers of political prisoners/member of persecuted minorities (in this case, the Jewish) were imprisoned.
Death camp A prison camp, especially for political POW's, in which many die from poor conditions or from mass execution.
Discriminate Differentiate
Einstazgruppen Death squads that were responsible for mass killings; targeted Jews in particular.
"Final Solution to the Jewish Question" The plan to eradicate and systematically kill the Jewish.
Fugitive One who is in hiding/fleeing to avoid arrest or persecution.
Gas chamber A sealed chamber in which gas is introduced. Was used for mass killing by the Nazis.
Genocide Deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those in a particular ethnic group.
Gestapo A German secret police under the Nazi rule.
Ghetto The Jewish quarter in a city.
Guerrilla Irregular fighting.
Holocaust Survivor One who has survived the Holocaust.
Israel A "permanent homeland" for Jews-many immigrated here.
Jew One whose traditional religion is Judaism.
Labor camp A prison camp where a regime of hard labor is enforced.
Martial law Military government involving the suspension of ordinary law.
Nazi A member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party.
NSB Nationaal Socialistische Beweging-the National Socialist mvmt. in the Netherlands.
Occupied countries The countries that were occupied by Germany.
Palestine A territory in the Middle East on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
Persecute Subject to hostility and ill-treatment, usually because of their race/political/religious beliefs.
Pogrom An organized massacre of a particular ethnic group.
Prejudice Preconceived opinion not based on reason or experience.
Propaganda Information of a biased/misleading nature used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.
Ration A fixed amount of a commodity officially allowed to each person during a time or shortage.
Refugee One who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war/persecution/natural disaster.
Scapegoat A person/group made to bear the blame for others or to suffer in their place.
Secret Annexe A secret building joined/associated with the main building-providing additional space.
Stuka A type of German military aircraft designed for dive bombing.
Synagogue A building where a Jewish assembly or congregation meets for religious observance and instruction.
Third Reich The Nazi regime: 1933-1945.
Underground Beneath the surface of the ground
World War II A war fought from 1939-1945 between the Axis and Allies.
