10 Examples of Literary devices

"Our eyes were opened, but too late." pg. 32 Metaphor: eyes do not really open, but are being directly compared to something that does.
"My feet were running without my being aware of it" pg. 48 Synecdoche: feet don't actually run, the body runs. Feet are only part of what runs.
"Bread, soup-these were my whole life" pg. 60 Metaphor: bread, and soup are being compared directly to Elie's life.
"as if my head had decided to say yes..." pg. 66 Synecdoche: The head is only a part of the decision making process and doesn't make decisions on it's own.
"Buna was a real hell then." pg. 77 Metaphor: While it probably felt like one, Buna was not a real hell.
"Today, this is a little paradise." pg. 77 Simile: this quote is comparing life at Buna to a paradise.
"His glazed, faded eyes looked at me." pg. 87 Imagery: Describes Elie's neighbors eyes as he comes bearing bad news.
";we were running. Like automatons." pg. 91 Simile: Elie is comparing the way he and the other Jews were running to Automoatons (robots)
"He left then as he had come: like a wind-swept shadow." pg. 97 Imagery: Describes the way an older Jew moves, comparing it to a drifting motion.
"The camp looked as though it had suffered an epidemic: empty and dead." Simile: comparing their first camp's look to that of some place suffering an epidemic.
