The different poetry genres.
| Term | Definition |

| Cento Poetry | A poetical work which is composed of verses or stanzas taken from other authors, although it is in a new form or order. |
| Lyrical Poetry | Type of poetry written in the present tense that often expresses feelings, and is often turned into a song with verses and a refrain. |
| Didactic | A poem that teaches a moral lesson. |
| Blank Verse | A poem without rhyme that uses the iambic pentameter. |
| Epitaph | A brief poem or piece of writing that is written in respect or honor of a deceased person. |
| Ode | A lyric poem addressing a particular subject, often elevated in style or manner & is written in varied or irregular meter. |
| Dramatic | A verse composition that is meant to tell a serious story by representing or impersonating actors by performing dialogue and action. |
| Acrostic Poem | A poem or series of lines in which certain letters, usually the first in each line, form a name, motto, or message when read in sequence. |
| Cinquain | A short poem consisting of five, usually unrhymed lines containing, respectively, two, four, six, eight, and two syllables. |
| Haiku | A short poem where there are five syllables in the first line, seven in the second line, and five in the third. |
| Concrete Poem | The arrangement of words which broadly convey the effect of the poem and its elements in a certain shape or form. |
| Diamante | A poem that doesn't rhyme and has seven lines It's also diamond shaped. |
| Sonnet | A poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, in English typically having ten syllables per line. |
| Narrative Poem | A poem that has a plot. |
| Epic | A long exaggerated poem about someone. |
| Ballad | A poem or song narrating a story in short stanzas. |
| Light Verse | A type of poetry that attempts to be humorous. These poems are brief. |
| Free Verse | A poem that has no rhyme or regular meter. |
| Parody | A humorous or satirical imitation of a serious piece of literature. Used for comedic and/or dramatic effects. |
| Allegory | A poem that has a subliminal (hidden) meaning to it. The meaning is moral or spiritual. |
| Limerick | A short, humorous poem in five-line meter with a strict rhyme scheme. |
