The different figurative language and poetry terms.
| Term | Definition |

| Hyperbole | An over-exaggeration for dramatic effect of something or someone that is used in a poem or song. |
| Rhyme | Words with the endings sounding the same. |
| Sonnet | A poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, in English typically having ten syllables per line. |
| Assonance | The repetition of similar or identical vowel sounds. |
| Stanza | A section of lines in a poem, aka a verse. In Greek and Latin poems, they're typically four lines long. |
| Ode | A lyric poem addressing a particular subject, often elevated in style or manner and written in varied or irregular meter. |
| Allusion | A reference to a piece of literature while you are reading a novel. |
| Poetry | A literary work where an author's feelings are expressed with emphasis in the rhythm and style. These are done for pleasure and expect emotional reactions. |
| Irony | When the unexpected happens. |
| Simile | A sentence that uses "like" or "as" to compare two words. |
| Personification | Giving human characteristics to inanimate objects. |
| Verse | A way to separate stanza(s) from the chorus. Adds on to story and makes it various |
| Ballad | A poem or song narrating a story in short stanzas. |
| Color Words | Words or terms to define a color differently. |
| Onomatopoeia | A word that is made from a sound associated with what it's named. |
| Metaphor | Compares two words without using like or as. |
| Limerick | A short, humorous, often nonsense poem, especially one in five-line meter with a strict rhyme scheme. |
| Refrain | To repeat a line or verse repeatedly throughout a poem or song often at the end of a verse. |
| Narrative Poetry | Poetry that has a plot. It has a consistent rhyme scheme. |
| Alliteration | The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. |
