Elements of a Story

TermDefinition
Conflict is a problem in the story
Internal Conflict takes place in the mind of the story
External Conflict one in which the character struggles with an outside force or another person
Plot is the sequence of events in a short story.It is usually divided into three parts.
Exposition introduces the setting,the characters,and the basic situation
Climax is located in highest point of the story
Falling Action the part of the story when the action lessens
Resolution is when the problem is solved
Setting is the time and the place in the action of the story
Mood how the story makes the reader feel
Charactars the people or animals that take part in the story
Characters Traits the attitude and personality that the character possesses
Characters Motives reasons for a characters actions
Theme the central message expressed in the story
Stated Theme when the theme is clearly stated
Inferred Theme suggest,or stated indirectly through what happens to the charactar
Universal Theme A recurring theme,a message about life that is often expressed in many different eras and cultures
