Basic Grammar Cncpts
| Question | Answer |

| adjective | describes a noun. This word answers a "What/Who" question. Examples: small, blue, old, fast |
| adverb | describes a verb or an adjective and often ends in "ly." This word answers a "how" question? Examples: quickly, loudly, independently, humorously |
| noun | a person, place, thing, or idea Examples: car, book, person, history |
| verb | an action (something that a person/thing can do) Examples: runs, eats, hopes, studies |
| clause | a GROUP OF WORDS that contains a subject and a predicate |
| complex sentence | a sentence that includes at least ONE INDEPENDENT and ONE DEPENDENT clause |
| compound sentence | a sentence that includes at least TWO INDEPENDENT clauses |
| conjunction | a part of speech that CONNECTS words Examples: and, or, but |
| independent clause | a group of words that expresses a COMPLETE THOUGHT (made up of a subject and predicate) |
| dependent clause | a group of words that does not express a complete thought |
| declarative sentence (think of a teacher stating a fact) | a sentence that makes a STATEMENT or observation |
| exclamatory sentence (think of a surprised person exclaiming aloud) | a sentence that expresses strong feelings by making an EXCLAMATION |
| imperative sentence (think of an emperor ordering his slaves around) | a sentence that gives INSTRUCTIONS or makes a COMMAND |
| interrogative sentence (think of a police officer interrogating a criminal) | a sentence that asks a QUESTION |
| predicate | modifies the subject (can be a verb, object, or phrase) |
| subject | the part of the sentence that tells what it is about |
| sentence | a GROUP OF WORDS that expresses a COMPLETE IDEA |
