QuestionAnswer
What is osmosis? Diffusion of water molecules across a cell's outer membrane from areas of high water concentration to areas of low water concentration
What is plasmolysis? The shrinking of the cytoplasm of a plant cell in response to diffusion of water out of the cell and into a high salt concentration solution
Lab 17- Describe the location of chloroplasts in a normal Elodea cell (in tap water) Evenly distributed
Lab 17- Describe the location of chloroplasts in a plasmolyzed cell (in salt water) Bunched together
Lab 17- What percentage of salt and water on the inside do Elodea cells normally contain? 1% salt and 99% water on the inside
Lab 17- What is the percentage of salt and water in tap water? 1% salt and 99% water
Lab 17- What does salt water have a higher concentration of compared to fresh water or Elodea leaves? Salt
Lab 17- What is the percentage of salt and water in salt water? 6% salt and 94% water
Lab 17- What does salt water have a higher concentration of compared to fresh water or Elodea leaves? Salt
Lab 17- Did the inside of the cell change due to water? Yes it looked broken and drier
What is a isotonic solution? When the concentration of solutes outside and inside the cell are equal. The cell doesn't change.
What is a hypotonic solution? When the concentration of a solute molecules outside the cell is lower than the concentration in the cytosol
What is a hypertonic solution? When the concentration of a solute molecules outside the cell is higher than the concentration of the cytosol
Lab 17- What direction should water move from? From high to low
Respiration- What is the equation for respiration? C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
Respiration- What is bromothymol blue an indicator for? Carbon Dioxide
Respiration- What color does bromothymol blue change to when it is exposed to carbon dioxide? From blue to yellow
Respiration- Why does bromothymol blue change yellow when yeast is added? Because yeast was carrying on respiration
Respiration- How did sugar affect the rate of respiration? Adding sugar to it increases the rate of respiration because respiration is the process of breaking down sugar
Respiration- How did temperature affect the rate of respiration? The warmer the temperature of water that faster respiration occurs
Respiration- What was the purpose of this experiment? To visualize respiration
Lab 26 Chromosome Study- What does a karyotype indicate? An individual's chromosomes arranged in homologous pairs and in order of diminishing size. Can indicate if a chromosome is missing, damaged, or if there is an extra chromosome. Cannot indicate a change in an individual's genes.
Lab 26 Chromosome Study- What is the difference between haploid and diploid? Cells that have two sets of chromosomes are diploid and haploid cells only have half the number of chromosomes that are present in diploid cells
Lab 26 Chromosome Study- What are homologous pairs? The chromosomes exact copy or pair.
Lab 26 Chromosome Study- What is the normal number of chromosomes for humans? 46
Lab 26 Chromosome Study- What is trisomy? When there are three instances of a particular chromosome instead of a normal two
Lab 26 Chromosome Study- How is a karyotype made? By taking a photo of a cell during prophase, and enlarging the chromosomes
Lab 26 Chromosome Study- What is the criteria for matching chromosome pairs? The position of the centromere, the banding patterns, and the size of the chromosome.
Lab 26 Chromosome Study- Which chromosome pair is abnormal in trisomy? 8
Lab 26 Chromosome Study- What is a somatic cell? Any cell forming the body of an organism
Lab 26 Chromosome Study- What is a sex chromosome? One pair of chromosomes that determine the sex
Lab 17 Mitosis Slides- What mitotic structures can actually be seen on slides? All but centromere and centrioles
Lab 17 Mitosis Slides- What are the phases in order of longest to shortest? Prophase, telophase, anaphase, metaphase
Lab 17 Mitosis Slides- What is the difference between plant and animal mitosis? Plant cell mitosis does not involve furrowing instead it involves the formation of a cell plate
Amnion Lab- What did the paper clip represent? The embryo
Amnion Lab- What did the ziploc bag represent? The amniotic sac
Amnion Lab- What did the water represent? Amniotic Fluid
Amnion Lab- What is the function of the amnion? To protect the embryo
Amnion Lab- What is the function of the placenta? Attaches the developing fetus to the uterus and enables the exchange of nutrients, wastes, and gases between the mother and the fetus
DNA Model- What is base pairing? Cytosine pairs with guanine and adenine pairs with thymine in DNA
