Chapter 1: Genres and subgenres of Literature
| Term | Definition |

| Fiction | Literature based on Imaginary events rather than facts. Novels and short stories |
| Non-Fiction | Literature that contains real life factual information based on occurrences, experiences and events. Essays, memoirs, and biographies. |
| Genre | A CATEGORY of an art form |
| Prose | Ordinary or commonplace writing (everyday speech). Does not rhythmical structure (like poetry). Can be broken down in fiction or non-fiction |
| Poetry | Literature that relies on rhythm, lyric, metric, stylistic, and aesthetics to convey meaning. Poems come in free forms or in established forms such as Haiku's and Sonnets |
| Drama | Performance based literature that is meant to be acted out in front of an audience. |
| Apprenticeship Novel | SUB genre. Also called Bildungsroman. A novel of that tell a story of a young character advancing from a stage of innocence to a stage of adulthood. |
| Epic | SUB genre. Epic related content. Both novels and epics. Major events such as wars, empire building and heroic characters. |
| Epistolary | SUB genre. A novel that is told through letters written between one or more characters |
| Picaresque | SUB genre. Early novel form. Often Satirical in nature. Concerns the experiences of a traveler who must rely on his wits in order to survive. |
| Novella | SUB genre. A work that is longer than a short story but contains characteristics of a novel |
| Narrative | The telling of a story. That telling comes from some kind of voice. |
| Lyric | Smaller scale Poem. Usually emotional and personal in nature. Usually rhythmic and utilize a particular meter. |
| Sonnet | Most common lyric form. 14 line poem. Can be broken down into various types of sonnet. |
