English 12 vocab words

TermDefinition
Allegation A claim or assertion that someone has done something illegal or wrong.
appurtenance An accessory or other item associated with a particular activity or style of living.
behoove It is a duty or responsibility for someone to do something; it is incumbent on: "it behooves any coach to study his predecessors".
bibliography A list of the books referred to in a scholarly work, usually printed as an appendix
commute Travel some distance between one's home and place of work on a regular basis
emolument A salary, fee, or profit from employment or office
evasive Tending to avoid commitment or self-revelation, esp. by responding only indirectly.
foible A minor weakness or eccentricity in someone's character: "they have to tolerate each other's little foibles".
garish Obtrusively bright and showy; lurid
gauche Lacking ease or grace; unsophisticated and socially awkward.
imbibe Drink (alcohol).
implicate Show (someone) to be involved in a crime: "police implicated him in more killings
ineffable Too great or extreme to be expressed or described in words: "ineffable beauty".
opulent Ostentatiously rich and luxurious or lavish
rapacious Aggressively greedy or grasping: "rapacious landlords".
reverberate (of a loud noise) Be repeated several times as an echo
roseate Rose-colored
schism A split or division between strongly opposed sections or parties, caused by differences in opinion or belief.
truism A statement that is obviously true and says nothing new or interesting.
vertebrate An animal of a large group distinguished by the possession of a backbone or spinal column, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibian...
