cap-a-pie From head to foot; at all points.
carte blanche Unrestricted power to act at one's own discretion; unconditional authority
contre-temps An unforeseen event that disrupts the normal course of things; an inopportune occurrence.
coup de grace the blow that kills (usually mercifully)
coup d'etat a sudden and decisive change of government illegally or by force
cul de sac a passage with access only at one end.
denoument the final resolution of the intricacies of a plot, as of a drama or novel.
eclat Brilliancy of success or effort; splendor; brilliant show; striking effect; glory; renown
hors de combat Out of action; disabled.
impasse a position or situation from which there is no escape; deadlock.
ingenue a naive girl or young woman
insouciance Casual lack of concern; indifference.
laissez fair a philosophy or practice characterized by a usually deliberate abstention from direction or interference especially with individual freedom of choice and action
milieu surroundings, especially of a social or cultural nature.
parvenu A person who has suddenly risen to a higher social and economic class and has not yet gained social acceptance by others in that class.
penchant A strong or habitual liking for something or tendency to do something.
piece de resistance the outstanding item (the prize piece or main exhibit) in a collection
pot pourri a miscellaneous collection
savoir faire knowledge of just what to do in any situation; tact.
sobriquet a descriptive name or epithet
