Scientific Revolution: Soc studies chap 34

QuestionAnswer
What was Copernicus's theory about the sun and planets? How was it different from what people believed before? Copernicus figured out that the sun is in the middle of the universe and not the Earth. This is different from what people believed before which is that the earth was the center of the universe.
What kind of evidence did Copernicus and, later, Kepler use to develop and support his theory? Copernicus and Kepler both used mathematics and observation to support the Copernicus's theory.
Why do you think most people were unwilling to believe Copernicus's theory? It was a common belief that the earth was a center of the universe. They didn't want to be against Aristotle and the Church and the Bible who supported Ptolemy's theory.
What were some of the important discoveries Galileo made with his telescope? Some of the important discoveries Galileo made with his telescope is that he saw things that the moon's surface was rough and uneven, he discovered four moons revolving around Jupiter, that the Moon and Venus goes through phases
How did these discoveries help support the heliocentric theory? It proved and gave more evidence Venus and Earth travelled around the sun. It showed that Earth was not in the center of the universe.
Why do you think church leaders felt so threatened by Galileo's support of the heliocentric theory? The Church did not want people to doubt their teachings. The idea that Earth was the center of the universewas part of an entire system of belief approved by the church.
What was the basic idea behind Newton's law of gravity? The basic idea behind Newton's Law of Gravity is that there is a force of attraction between all physical objects. The strength of the force depends on the massess of the objects and the distance between them.
How did Newton's work support the earlier work of Copenicus, Kepler, and Galileo? Newton's laws provided a physical explanation for what earlier scientists had discovered. Newton's laws explained why the planets moved around the sun...that gravity kept the planets traveling around the sun.
Many historians consider Isaac Newton one of the three most important figures in history. Based on what you've learned would you agree. why? Yes I agree Newton wrote Principia which described the three laws of motion which dramatically changed people's picture of the universe. many people began to see the universe as a beautifully designed machine and applied the mathematical laws everywhere.
What are the steps of the scientific method? 1.State a question or problem 2.Form a hypothesis 3.Conduct an experiment to test hypothesis 4.Make observations, collect datat 5.analyze data to see if hypothesis is correct
What were some key scientific tools developed during the scientific revolution? 1.telescope 2.microscope 3.barometer 4.thermometer
How important do you think these tools and the scientific method are today? Explain They are very important because the telescope, microscope, barometer, and thermometer, scientific method are still used today. Scientists can repeat the method another has done and test other's ideas for themselves.
(roots) During the middles ages, what two major sources guided most Europeans thinking about the natural world The first was the Bible or word of God and what it said about nature must be true. The second source was the teachings of Aristotle who had written about nature.
(roots2) During the Renaissance what did scholars rediscover? Renaissance scholars rediscovered more of the culture of ancient Greece and Rome. Many thinkers were influenced by Greek rationalism, the belief that reason could be used to discover truths about the world. They began to observe nature for themselves.
