Propaganda terms used in commercials

PropagandaExplanationExample
Name-calling A negative thought is attached to someone or something to make people feel uninterested. "Do we want a mayor who will leave us in debt?" "Spending grew 100% under Mayor Moneybags!"
Testimonial A famous person endorses a product, so we should use it. Milly the Model asks, “Got Milk? ”
Glittering Generality A commonly used virtue to inspire positive feelings. "Look on the bright side! Vote for Bill Brite!"
Card-stacking Making a biased argument; only telling all the upsides of a product. "Everything on this car looks wonderful! Everything is fully-functioning, too!"
Plain-folks appeal A product that is tied with everyday people and activities. "We want Jim Smith, a mayor who supports the regular American worker."
Transfer Symbols, quotes, or images of famous things are tied to a product, although the famous thing may not be associating with the product. "Celebrate the American Way this 4th of July- Eat at Joe’s"
Emotional Words Words that leave us with positive feelings, then we associate the feelings with the product. A cologne is called "True Love"
Faulty Reasoning Factual details are used, but they don't support the conclusion. Penguins are black and white. TV's are black and white. Therefore, penguins are TV's.
Either/Or (sometimes Fear-based) Making a complicated decision seem simple by making it seem that there are only two decisions instead of three or more. We have to invade or America will be destroyed!
Fear Products bring out our fears then put them to rest. "Guard against Identity theft Use Safety Ware"
Oversimplification Making something complicated seem really simple. "We could stop all illegal drug trafficking if we just built a big fence between us and South and Central America!
Circular Reasoning Beginning with the point your trying to prove. This class is boring because it’s not interesting!
Euphemism Making something unpleasant seem more pleasant "My father passed away"
Bandwagon Everyone is doing this, so you should too to fit in. "Bank of the World Visa Card- You can use it from Tennessee to Timbuktu- anywhere you travel in whole wide world !!"
