What is Fire Support? Fires that directly support land, maritime, amphibious and SF to engage enemy forces, combat formations and facilities in pursuit of tactical and operational objectives
Lethal Fire support assets include: Mortars, Naval gunfire, CAS-Fixed, CCA-Rotary, Field Artillery
FSO Fire Support Officer
FIST Fire Support Team
FA Capabilities Provide fire under all conditions of weather and terrain; Shift and mass fires rapidly without displacing; add depth to combat; fire a variety of conventional shell/fuze combinations; is as mobile as the supported unit; provides counter fire
FA Limitations Limited self-defense capability against ground/air attack; limited ability to destroy armored moving targets; firing signature and comunications make it vulnerable to enemy detection.
Mission of FA Is to integrate and deliver lethal and non-lethal fires to enable joint and maneuver commanders to dominate their operational environment across the spectrum of operations
M119A2 Howitzer, 105MM, towed. Found in light airborne and air assautl infantry units
M198 Medium Howitzer, 155MM, towed. Found in Fires Brigades, USMC and Stryker Brigades
M777A1 Lightweight Howitzer, 155MM, towed. Replacing M198
M109A6 "Paladin" 155MM self-propelled Howitzer. Found in Mech/Armor BCTs, Armored Cav Regt and various fires brigades
MLRS Multiple Launch Rocket System. Self propelled Loader Launcher. Found in heavy Fires Brigades
HIMARS High Mobility Artillery Rocket System. Currently fielded in Fires Brigade
Fire Finder Radar Q-36: Ideal for High Angle Systems (mortars); Q37: ideal for low angle, long range systems
LCMR Lightweight Counter-Mortar Radar
Fires Brigade Mission: ...employing joint and organic fires capabilities in support of Commander's operational and tactical objectives. Fires Brigades are designed to support Divisions or Higher HQs
Field Artillery Organization for Combat 2 part process: Establishment of a command relationship; Assignment of a field artillery tactical mission (support relationship)
Establishment of a Command Relationship The degree of control and responsibility a commander has for forces operating under his command: Organic, Assigned, Attached, Operational Control (OPCON)
Organic Organic units are listed on the TO&E of the parent unit. Permanent-determined by the Dept. of Defense
Assigned Unit is placed in an organization where such placement is relatively permanent. Gaining unit is responsible for administrative, logistics and personnel support as well as command and control
Attached Unit/individual placed under a headquarters on a relatively temporary basis. Attached HQs is responsible for logistics support and command/control, but assigned HQs maintains admin/personnel support
Operation Control OPCON HQs commands and controls but DOES NOT provide logistics, admin or personnel support
Tactical Missions FA supports maneuver units using 1 of 4 standard tactical missions: Direct Support; General Support; Reinforcing; General Support Reinforcing
Standard Tactical Missions: TMs are assigned by the Force Commander. Each STM has SEVEN inherent responsibilities
7 Inherent Responsibilities Answer Calls for Fire in Priority; Has as its zone of fire; Furnish FOs/Fire support teams to; establish liasion with; establish communication with; weapons moved and deployed by; has its fires planned by
On ORder Missions Follow-on Missions based on anticipated need for future support; allows commanders to preapre his assets/personnel for future operations
Nonstandard Mission When assignment of a standard tactical mission will not meet all requirements of a situation; Accomplished by limiting or changing 1 or more of the seven inherent responsibilities
