12C Forces Terms Pt1
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a force? | A push or a pull. Vector quantity. |
| How do forces affect motion? | They cause objects to speed up, slow down, push them around corners or up hills. |
| What is the force of gravity? | Force of attraction between any two objects with mass. |
| What is the normal force? | Force perpendicular to surfaces of objects in contact. |
| What is friction? | Force that acts on an object opposite to the object's motion or attempted motion. |
| What is static friction? | Force that prevents stationary objects from starting to move. |
| What is kinetic friction? | Force that acts against an object's motion. |
| What is air resistance? | Friction that acts on an object moving through air. |
| When is air resistance important: always, when objects are not moving, low speeds or high speeds? | At high speeds. |
| What is tension? | Force exerted by strings, ropes, fibers, cables. |
| What is applied force? | General term for any contact force. |
| What are the units of force? | Newtons (N) |
| What units make up a Newton? | Kilograms, meters, seconds |
| Name some common forces that act on objects. | Force of gravity, normal force, friction, static friction, kinetic friction, air resistance, tension, applied force. |
