12C Forces Terms Pt1

QuestionAnswer
What is a force? A push or a pull. Vector quantity.
How do forces affect motion? They cause objects to speed up, slow down, push them around corners or up hills.
What is the force of gravity? Force of attraction between any two objects with mass.
What is the normal force? Force perpendicular to surfaces of objects in contact.
What is friction? Force that acts on an object opposite to the object's motion or attempted motion.
What is static friction? Force that prevents stationary objects from starting to move.
What is kinetic friction? Force that acts against an object's motion.
What is air resistance? Friction that acts on an object moving through air.
When is air resistance important: always, when objects are not moving, low speeds or high speeds? At high speeds.
What is tension? Force exerted by strings, ropes, fibers, cables.
What is applied force? General term for any contact force.
What are the units of force? Newtons (N)
What units make up a Newton? Kilograms, meters, seconds
Name some common forces that act on objects. Force of gravity, normal force, friction, static friction, kinetic friction, air resistance, tension, applied force.
