| liquid | definite volume but no definite shape with particles closely packed, but freely moving |
| gas | no definite shape or volume with particles that are moving very fast, spreading apart |
| crystalline solid | particles are arranged in a regular, repeating pattern, ex- snow, salt, and sugar |
| amorphous solid | particles are not arranged in a regular pattern, ex- rubber, glass, and plastic |
| fluid | any substance that flows, ex- liquids and gases |
| surface tension | the result of the inward pull amoung molecules that brings the molecules on the surface closer together |
| viscosity | a liquids resistance to flowing |
| melting | a solid turning into a liquid as it gains heat energy |
| freezing | a liquid turning into a solid as it loses heat energy |
| condensation | a gas turning into a liquid as it loses heat energy |
| vaporization | a liquid turning into a gas as it gains heat energy |
| sublimation | a solid turning into a gas as it gains heat energy |
| evaporation | vaporization that occurs on the surface of a liquid |
| boiling | vaporization that occurs both on and below the surface |
| melting point | the temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid |
| freezing point | the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid |
| boiling point | the temperature at which a liquid boils |
| chemistry | the study of the properties of matter and how they change |
| element | a pure substance that cannot be broken down by physical or chemical means |
| atom | the basic particle that makes up all elements |
| chemical bond | an attraction between two atoms |
| molecule | two or more atoms chemically bonded together |
