Essential Vocab.

QuestionAnswer
Main Idea The central message or point of a nonfiction text
Theme The central message of a literary text
Summary A short restatement of a text in the reader’s own words
Supporting detail a fact, example, reason, or other detail that backs up the central message
Objective Without judgment/bias; it is based on fact--encyclopedia, textbooks
Subjective With judgment/bias; assessment influenced by opinions and beliefs--editorials, blogs, commentary
Tone The author’s attitude toward his/her audience and subject
Mood The feeling created in the reader by a literary work
Imagery Words or phrases that appeal to one of the five senses
Contribute To have a part in bringing about/developing a concept
Impact To have an effect on
Cause The reason something happens such as an event or action
Effect (N.)What happens as a result of a cause; a consequence/outcome
Affect (V.) To have an influence on; to produce a change in
