| Theme | The central message of a literary text |
| Summary | A short restatement of a text in the reader’s own words |
| Supporting detail | a fact, example, reason, or other detail that backs up the central message |
| Objective | Without judgment/bias; it is based on fact--encyclopedia, textbooks |
| Subjective | With judgment/bias; assessment influenced by opinions and beliefs--editorials, blogs, commentary |
| Tone | The author’s attitude toward his/her audience and subject |
| Mood | The feeling created in the reader by a literary work |
| Imagery | Words or phrases that appeal to one of the five senses |
| Contribute | To have a part in bringing about/developing a concept |
| Impact | To have an effect on |
| Cause | The reason something happens such as an event or action |
