Poetry Terms Defenitions
| Term | Defenition |

| Figurative Language | Whenever you describe something to someone by comparing it to something else you are using figurative language, or when you use descriptive language. For example: Busy as a bee, or fluffy, puffy clouds |
| Literal Language | When something means what it says, i.e. The cat ate his food. |
| Imagery | Using the poem to evoke an image |
| Denotation | The definition of a word |
| Connotation | The feelings or thoughts associated with a word |
| Stanza | A verse, or a collection of lines relating to each other; similar to a paragraph |
| Speaker | The point of view at which the story is being told |
| Metaphor | A comparison of two unlike things |
| Simile | A Metaphor, however it uses the words like, or as |
| Personification | Giving human characteristics to a non-human thing i.e. Stupid Vacuum! |
| Hyperbole | To exaggerate |
| Symbol | An item used to represent a concept, i.e. a war memorial, to represent the war |
| Irony | An example being a fire hydrant on fire |
| Rhyme | when the endings of word sound the same Bat, cat, and mat all rhyme |
| approximate | about, roughly |
| Rhyme Scheme | Demonstrates; with letters how the end of a poem rhymes I'm writing a poem about a cat A He likes to wear a silly hat A He got it from the grocery store B But lost it, and can't wear it anymore B |
| Rythm | A regularly repeated sound pattern of accented and unaccented syllables |
| Allieration | The repetition of a sound within a word. |
| Cacophony | The mixture of hard sounds i.e. x,c,g,p,k |
| euphony | The use of pleasant sounding words to create a good mood |
| onomatopoeia | A word that describes a sound i.e. click, pow, drip, pop, bang |
