Descriptive devices and poetic terms
| term | defintion |

| Figurative language | whenever you describe something by comparing it to something else you are using. figurative language, or when you use descriptive language. Example: Busy as a bee, of fluffy, puffy clouds. |
| Literal Language | when something is written and it means exactly what it says. Example the frog sat on the log |
| Images/Imagery | Creating a picture with words. Also using your senses Example: The red rose was perfect in its form; the soft, velvety petals curled around the core, and its gentle sent of beauty was appreciated by all who passed |
| Denotation | The literal or dictionary meaning of a word. Example: Home- the residence in which a person lives |
| Connotation | The feeling or emotions evoked by a word. In essence, the emotional meaning of a word, as opposed to the literal meaning. Example: Home-family, warmth, safety, rest, food, boredom |
| Stanza | A collection of lines and ideas similar to a paragraph in prose writing. |
| Speaker | the voice or point of view of the poem. In Langston Hugh's poem, mother to son, the voice of the poem is a mother, through the poet is a man. |
