Ecology vocabulary and concepts

| Carnivore | Feeds only on other animals |
| Community | A group of organisms or populations living and interacting with one another in a particular environment. |
| Consumer | An organism that gets its food energy from producers. |
| Decomposer | Organisms that break down dead/decaying matter and return the nutrients to the soil. |
| Ecology | The study of the interactions between organisms and their environment. |
| Ecosystem | A community of living and non-living things. |
| Food Chain | A model used to show how energy from food passes from one organism to another. |
| Food Web | A model used to describe a series of overlapping food chains |
| Habitat | The physical location of where an organism lives within a community. |
| Herbivore | A consumer that feeds on only plants |
| Niche | The role of an organism within the ecosystem. |
| Omnivore | A consumer that feeds on both plants and animals. |
| Population | The same species living together in the same place at the same time. |
| Predator | An organism that hunts and eats other animals. |
| Prey | An organism that is hunted and eaten by other animals |
| Producer | Something that makes its own food |
