Functions Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Regression equation the equation representing the relation between selected values of one variable (x) and observed values of the other (y); it permits the prediction of the most probable values of y
Residuals of, relating to, or designating a residue or remainder; remaining; left over
Best Fit Line The line of best fit is a line on a graph which shows the direction of a group of points. This can be used for predictions.
Correlation Coefficient A measure of the interdependence of two random variables that ranges in value from -1 to +1, indicating perfect negative correlation at -1, absence of correlation at zero, and perfect positive correlation at +1.
Interpolate To estimate a value of (a function or series) between two known values.
Linear Function a mathematical function in which the variables appear only in the first degree, are multiplied by constants, and are combined only by addition and subtraction
Regression a functional relationship between two or more correlated variables that is often empirically determined from data and is used especially to predict values of one variable when given values of the others
Y-Intercept the y-coordinate of a point where a line, curve, or surface intersects the y-axis
Slope the slope of any line, ray, or line segment is the ratio of the vertical to the horizontal distance between any two points on it (“slope equals rise over run”)
Extrapolate to infer (values of a variable in an unobserved interval) from values within an already observed interval

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
