What is social theory? the normal accomplishment of socially adept human creatures figuring out what others are doing with, to, or around them. It is about the things people don't want to talk about.
Why is social theory a feature of the modern age? expressions of the enlightenment culture (literacy, densely populated areas, civil societies) modern life encouraged critical thinking and allowed individuals to ask questions that promoted breaking from tradition
Why is social theory important to sociology? sociology is about the consciousness of the society one lives in. the enlightenment culture set the foundation for it to emerge. allowed reflexivity, awareness of the forces that control us and structures we find ourselves in.
Mills Marxist and rebel. Interested in conflict. Sociological imagination: intersection of history, biography and social structure. Difference between a trouble (personal) and issue (societal)
Dubois Double consciousness. Looking at oneself through the eyes of others. Multi-faceted conception of self.
Simmel Jewish. Friend of Weber. Rejected theories of Comte and Spencer. The Stranger: connected but connected. Society is a web of patterned interactions.
Marx Friends with Engel. Alienation in Capitalist modes of production. Estranged labor. We are what we do. Estranged work reduces humans to animals. Estranged labor tears one away from their self, community and species (consciousness of their life)
Weber arguing with Marx's ghost. capitalism reflects a calvinist asceticism in which making money is a virtue. Our lives are controlled by demand for rational calculation in order to be judged as a good person.
Gilman Women are economically dependent on men. Are wives employees or partners? Neither. Morality is not discussed in the 19th century.
Durkheim Lawlessness, lack of moral rules. Modern society has destroyed a sense of community and traditional expectations. Economic function has become most important in a society.
