Linear Systems Vocab

QuestionAnswer
System of Equations A set of equations with the same variables
Consistent A system of equations that has at least one solution
Inconsistent A system of equations that has no solutions
Independent A system of equations that has exactly one solution
Dependent A consistent system of equations that has an infinite number of solutions
Substitution Method A method of solving a system of equations in which one equation is solved for one variable in terms of the other.
System of Inequalities A set of inequalities with the same variables.
Substitution Method A method of solving a system of equations in which one equation is solved for one variable in terms of the other
Elimination Method Eliminate one of the variables in a system of equations by adding or subtracting the equations
System of Inequalities A set of inequalities with the same variables
Constraints Conditions given to variables, often expressed as linear inequalities
Feasible Region The intersection of graphs that displays one or more similar characteristics
Bounded A region is bounded when the graph of system of constraints is a polygonal region.
Vertices The maximum or minimum value that a linear function has for the points in a feasible region.
Linear Programming The process of finding the maximum or minumum values of a function for a region defined by inequalities
Octants The eight regions of three-dimensional space
Ordered Triple 1. the coordinates of a point in space 2. The solution of a system of equations in three variables x,y, and z.
