QuestionAnswer
Great Compromise Agreement that ended the debate between large and small states.
Three-Fifths Compromise Agreement that determined how slaves would be counted for representation and placed a ban on asking for an end to slave trade.
popular sovereignty The idea that political power rests in the hands of the people.
federalism Sharing of power between the a central government and the states that make up a country.
checks and balances A system that prevents any branch of government from becoming too powerful.
executive branch includes the president and any department that helps to run the government. It makes sure laws are carried out.
legislative branch includes congress, the senate and the house and their job is to propose and pass laws.
judicial branch it is made up of all of the nations courts and is responsible for punishing laws for interpretting laws, punishing criminals and settling disputes between states.
James Madison A statesman, delagate to the Constitutional Convention, 4th prers of the US, author of federalist papers and father of the Constitution.
New Jersey Plan Unicameral legislature (1) with equal representation of states not representation by population. It was rejected at Constitutional Convention.
Virginia Plan National government would have supreme power and legislative branch would have two houses.
Constitutional Convention A meeting held in Philadelphia where delegates from states improved the Articles of Confederation.
