Fraction Basics

Vocabulary for 6th grade unit

Vocab TermDefinition
Lowest Common Denominator Needed when you make all fractions have the same bottom number. Used when comparing, adding, and subtracting fractions.
Reduce Rename a fraction so that it has the smallest numbers possible in the numerator & denominator.
Lowest Terms Rename a fraction so that it has the smallest numbers possible in the numerator & denominator.
Simplest Form Rename a fraction so that it has the smallest numbers possible in the numerator & denominator.
Equivalent Fractions that are equal in value; fractions that can be simplified to the same reduced fraction
Numerator The top part of a fraction; Tells how many parts are being used
Denominator Bottom of a fraction; Tells how many parts there are in the whole or in the group
